🧬 Activity 1: Monster Genetics (Punnett Squares)
Students use the genetic traits of Mr. and Mrs. Monster to predict and illustrate the features of their monster offspring. This lesson strengthens Punnett square skills while introducing concepts like genotype, phenotype, complete dominance, and incomplete dominance.
🎃 Activity 2: Pumpkin Genetics (Jack-o’-Lantern Cookies or Cutouts)
Using coin flips to determine traits, students design their own jack-o’-lanterns. Then, they bring their pumpkin to life by decorating a cookie or crafting a paper version, all while reinforcing their understanding of genetic variation.
💬 What Teachers Are Saying
“I did this project with my students on Halloween since we were in class. I shortened it quite a bit so that we could get through it in one day, but if we had the time I would have loved for them to do the entire thing. It probably would’ve taken us the full 2 days if not 3 to complete entirely. My students really liked creating their own monsters!”
